Hispanic Heritage Month is here, inviting us to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Hispanic communities that have shaped our nation. Celebrated from September 15 to October 15, this month allows us to reflect on their incredible impact on the U.S., both historically and today. This month's origins go back to 1968, when President Lyndon Johnson initiated Hispanic Heritage Week. Then, in 1988, President Ronald Reagan extended it to a whole month, and it was officially signed into law on August 17 of that year. The theme for 2024 is "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together," which honors remarkable individuals who have made significant contributions in their fields and inspired others along the way.
As we celebrate the rich contributions of Latinx and Hispanic communities this month, let’s also take the time to reflect on how we can weave the values of diversity and equity into every aspect of our lives. Together, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone. Here’s to a month of celebration, progress, inclusivity, and unity!
Understanding the Terms: Latinx vs. Hispanic
As we celebrate the rich contributions of Latinx and Hispanic communities to the fabric of American society this month, it’s equally important to explore the language we use to describe these diverse identities. The term "Hispanic" has been used for people from Spanish-speaking countries, but it can be limiting because it doesn't cover the full range of gender identities present in these groups.
Introducing "Latinx" as a gender-neutral option is essential for understanding gender diversity. While "Hispanic" is gender-specific, "Latinx" includes all gender identities, including non-binary individuals. This shift reflects a broader move towards gender inclusivity, aiming to create a term that recognizes and respects everyone. By using "Latinx," we work towards a more inclusive conversation acknowledging the richness of gender diversity within the Hispanic and Latinx communities. This change helps create a more welcoming environment in society, including at workplaces and supports our commitment to inclusivity and respect for all identities.
6 Ways to Make Hispanic Heritage Month More Inclusive at Your Workplace
A lot can be done to make Hispanic Heritage Month more inclusive at workplaces. Below are some ways in which we can make this month the most impactful yet!
- Use Inclusive Language: Incorporating terms like "Latinx" into your communications, policies, and celebrations is a powerful way to promote inclusivity and respect. This practice demonstrates the organization's acknowledgement of all identities within the Hispanic and Latinx communities, promoting a more inclusive workplace.
- Give Everyone the Chance to be Heard: Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by giving diverse voices and stories a platform. Invite speakers from various backgrounds, cultures, and sexual orientations. This enriches the celebration and encourages understanding and appreciation of diversity.
- Raise Awareness with Training: Use this opportunity to arrange training sessions on inclusive language and cultural competence. This can help employees understand the importance of terms like "Latinx"; creating a workplace that values inclusivity. The training should be interactive, encouraging open dialogue and learning.
- Create Safe Spaces for Conversation: Ensure employees feel comfortable sharing their experiences and identities. Openly discuss the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month and the importance of inclusive language. Providing a platform for these conversations can address misconceptions and build a more supportive community.
- Highlight Contributions and Achievements: Exhibit accomplishments and contributions of Latinx employees, leaders, and communities within your organization. Encourage employees to share stories of Latinx innovators through social media, internal newsletters, or events to inspire pride and promote appreciation of diversity.
- Arrange Cultural Workshops and Celebrations: Organizing workshops on Latinx traditions, art, and food during Hispanic Heritage Month is another fantastic way to help employees experience and learn about the rich cultures within the Hispanic community. These cultural activities can significantly increase employees' understanding, appreciation, and sense of community.
